Handmade in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Big Matuma, a large, traditional hand-woven Kuba Cloth adorned with Mibella Shells (Cowrie Shells) is made by the Kuba people of the Congo (DRC) from the fibers of the Raffia Palm. This unique piece is not the average Kuba Cloth as in addition to the numerous shells, the work is even more intricate, the color is a rich charcoal bordered by wine, which is again bordered by charcoal and methodically framed with 100 handmade raffia balls on each side of this rare, collectible cloth.
The making of Kuba is a multi-step process in which men, women and children of the same clan participate in gathering and preparing the raffia fibers for weaving, embroidery, applique, patchwork and dying. Although patchwork and appliqued Kuba is beautiful, this piece does not have patchwork or applique, which gives it a rich quality, adding to its uniqueness. Traditionally used in ceremonies or as a male or female "skirt", wrapped several times around the body, Kuba has many other uses, such as being a part of Lobola (gifts to the brides family by the potential groom), gifts to dignitaries, and draped over the stool of an important person.
These beautiful textiles are sought after all over the African and European continents and are now becoming more popular in the U.S. as its value is recognized.
